You can make a pigeon pedigree on paper, in Word or in pedigree software. Each has its place. This comparison helps you choose.
Free ways to make a pigeon pedigree
A blank pedigree to print. The simplest and completely free. Download a blank pedigree PDF in a Pigeclub design, print it and fill it in by hand. Fine for a few pigeons you sell.
A Word or Excel template. An editable pedigree on your computer at no cost. The downside is retyping: you enter every youngster's ancestors again, and a mistake in one ring number repeats in every pedigree after it.
Free options stop working once you have a real loft. With dozens of pigeons, retyping takes longer than the work in the loft.
What to look for in pigeon pedigree software
- Enter a pigeon once. A youngster's pedigree should come from its parents, with no retyping.
- Pedigree import. Pedigrees from other breeders arrive on paper and as PDFs. Good software imports them without typing.
- Edit in one place. Fix a result or colour on a pigeon, and it changes in every pedigree it appears in.
- Print and PDF. A clear printed pedigree and a file to send to the buyer.
- Race results next to the pigeons, carried into the pedigree.
- Phone and computer. Check a pedigree in the loft, print it at home.
- Moving old data. If your pigeons are in another program, you don't want to retype them.
Pigeclub
